McKenna: Szmodics OK, Hirst and Tuanzebe On Course For January Returns
Friday, 20th Dec 2024 14:49

Town boss Kieran McKenna says forward Sammie Szmodics is available having been ill last week, while he is hopeful George Hirst and Axel Tuanzebe will be back during January and has no new injury problems ahead of Saturday’s home game with Newcastle United.

Szmodics missed last Saturday’s 2-1 win at Wolves but TWTD spotted the summer signing from Blackburn chatting with staff from his first club Colchester during the U21s game with the U’s on Tuesday.

“Sammie’s OK, he missed the weekend, but he’s been training all week, so he’s OK,” McKenna said.

The Blues boss says there have been no further additions to the injury list since Saturday: “Nothing new this week, we’ve had a good clear week in training, so we’re pretty much as we were going into the game.”

George Hirst has been out since the win at Tottenham in early November with a knee problem, but McKenna says the striker is still a little way off a return.

“George is another few weeks at least, so we don’t expect to see him over the Christmas fixtures. We’ll see him in the new year,” he said.

Right-back Axel Tuanzebe, who picked up a hamstring injury in the Nottingham Forest match, is a little bit behind Hirst.

“A little bit longer, but along similar lines, certainly not going to be available for the next couple of weeks,” McKenna continued.

“If everything goes perfectly well from here, then it’s possible we could see him at some point in January.”

Hirst and Tuanzabe January returns would be like 2 decent new signings that already know the system etc. Hope all goes to plan, as we could do with them both back asap.

We must’ve been lining up a striker for a while now with us missing out / choosing not to go for Latte Lath and Broja. But I think we really need to be bringing in another right back as soon as we can. Both Johnson and Clarke are such huge drop-offs compared with Axel, we’ve conceded too many goals from that side of the pitch when they’ve been in the side.

SuperTabby. Can't have, seen many games lately. Johnson has been excellent in his, last few games. We don't need another rb, have plenty of players who can play there. Apart from him, Clarke and tuanzebe, O'Shea, can play there. Or even Woolfenden could. So bringing in another would be a,waste of money needed for elsewhere in the team. Also, we didn't choosecyo not go for latte lath. Our bid was rejected.

blues1. Been to the home matches and watched all the away matches (was at the London Stadium game). Johnson was great against Spurs playing in a 3421 on that right hand side with Axel behind him. He let the man in behind for Bournemouth’s first goal, Muric with the moment of madness but the player would still be in and would’ve squared the ball. He was good against Leicester but had a shocker against West Ham. Watch back the goals we’ve conceded when Tuanzebe has been out and tell me which side of the pitch they’re coming from. Nothing against him as he’s been struggling with injury which means we’ve had Clarke playing there for the other games who just isn’t premier league quality.

Don't hold your breath with George...he's injury prone, I bet when he gets back in January he'll be out again at some point before seasons end.
