Birmingham City will play in Sky Bet League One next season after they were relegated from the Championship despite securing a 1-0 win against play-off contenders Norwich.

Wins for Sheffield Wednesday at Sunderland, for Blackburn at promoted Leicester and for Plymouth against Hull made Blues’ result irrelevant.

This was the fifth time in 11 years that Blues have needed a positive result in their final game of the season to survive, but this time it was out of their hands as their 13-year tenure in the second tier ended, despite Paik Seung-ho’s 55th-minute header.

Blues fans were quick to deliver their verdict on a disastrous season on social media - and fingers are already being pointed. But there was defiance too. Here is what some of them have had to say…

Steve Thompson: Completely down to Garry Cooke and the looney Rooney decision. His position in the club needs to be properly assessed by the owners quickly. This will not get turned around easily, I fear for the next two years.

Richard Eynon: Absolute horror season, but look back to Hull away when they punched the ball into the net in front of all the officials, where would those 2 extra points have got us?

Martyn Beech: Hopefully the owners have learned a very harsh lesson, key decisions turn seasons. Set back at least 3 years from their original plans, down to one diabolical managerial change.

Garry Couchman: We deserved it ... too many awful performances this season.

John Copson: Lost it when we could only draw at Huddersfield and Rotherham, too many mistakes at the back this season. Good luck to Norwich in the play-offs.

Mac: If Stansfield, James, Myoshi, Paik and Hall want to stay great but the whole squad needs to go we need a complete clear out Mowbray needs to work with Gardner to get player in who actually want to fight.

Michael Baker: I want to know Tom Wagner’s thoughts. Players and owners should release an apology statement. Utter embarrassment.

Michael Brooks: Eustace kept Blackburn up.

TexasBlues: We’ll be back.

Gary Johnson: Embarrassing. If fans think blues will bounce straight back they are deluded.

Daniel Ivery: You’re not a proper Blues til you’ve seen us go down at least once. It hurts but we’ll come back stronger.
