Blackburn Rovers summer signing opens up about frustration over Cardiff City game time

Blackburn Rovers summer signing Greg Cunningham has said that the main motivation behind his move to Ewood Park was game time, after playing just eight times for Cardiff City over the course of the 2018/19 season.

Republic of Ireland international Greg Cunningham made a loan move from Cardiff City to Blackburn Rovers during the summer transfer window, coming in to add some much-needed reinforcement to Tony Mowbray’s backline, allowing Derrick Williams to focus on his transition from left-back to centre-back.

While he was used only eight times last season with Cardiff City, Cunningham is set for much more game time at Ewood Park, with defensive options at a minimum at Ewood Park.

And, speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph, Cunningham has said that the main reason behind his move to Blackburn was game time, saying that he was not willing to play a cover role at Cardiff City.

“I just want to play football. Some players are happy to fill that role, and you do need people to fill that role, but I don’t want to be one of them.

“I’m not forging a career to be a squad player. I have a log to offer and the gaffer had his opinion at Cardiff and I didn’t play as much. But I hope to work my way into the plans here and show the gaffer what I’m about.”

Cunningham went on to discuss the reasons behind his move from Preston North End to Cardiff City last summer, admitting that despite a highly successful time with Preston, a move to the Premier League was too good of an opportunity to turn down.

“I had some great years at Preston, but not very often does the door open to the Premier League. I don’t think anyone could blame for me making that decision.

“It didn’t go to plan, that is an honest assumption. I saw it going differently in my head but that’s how things can go in football. I kept my head down and did what I could when called upon, as rarely as it was.

“I had the opportunity to play some top sides. Unfortunately, the team got relegated, to go close was disappointing, but this is a new season and a new chapter for me.”
