Town To Lose Out On Pilkington Signing
Wednesday, 9th Jan 2019 12:39

Wigan Athletic appear to have won the race to sign Cardiff winger Anthony Pilkington, despite Town having made him a better financial offer, and he is set to be unveiled by the Latics later today.

TWTD understands Pilkington, 30, took the decision to join the Latics for purely personal reasons because his family home is in the North West and he was keen to relocate there.

Town boss Paul Lambert had targeted the Republic of Ireland international front man after working with him at Norwich, where he signed him from Huddersfield in a £2 million deal almost eight years ago.

Pilkington, who had also been linked with Blackburn, was out of favour at Cardiff, having not played for them since April last year and helping them to win promotion to the Premier League.

Lambert will now turn his attention elsewhere, with trialist Simon Dawkins still a possible new recruit after impressing for the U23s in Monday’s 4-2 win over Bristol City that keeps Town on top of the Professional Development League Two South table.

Former Tottenham, Derby and San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Dawkins, a 31-year-old Jamaican international, has been training with the first team for the last few weeks and is available on a free transfer. He worked briefly with Lambert, making four substitute appearances, during a loan spell at Aston Villa early in 2013.

First decent player we'd been linked with in months and we don't get him. Disappointed at this one.
Can't see any other good players being linked, I'm already starting to worry that Evans has lost the key to his '10 million war chest'!

I think we all expected this to happen, it's a pity but we have to find someone else now.

That says it all about us currently and we give him a better deal and he still chooses Wigan!...Personally would have preferred him over Quaner, I think the days of signing anybody with a reasonable amount of quality are over.

Perhaps the Norwich factor came into this decision , much like Cameron Jerome pre-season?

"So Anthony, what was it that persuaded you to reject the club 10 points adrift?"

Disappointing but our last too purchases from Cardiff have spent more time on the treatment table rather than playing. Warnock doesn't let them go without a reason!

Did you not read the article before you started moaning?

Do some people actually read the story? It gives personal family reasons as a core motive for the move.

It's a shame but not really surprising given our current 'status' even if we were to disregard his personal reasons for the move. We are still early in the month and I trust PL to move on to the next target.

I would've been fairly happy if we signed him but I'm not overly fussed about missing out on a player who has only played once in two years. We need players who are fully fit and ready to play.

This is a bad symptom of the general malaise.

We need to pull some aces from sleeves, if only for morale!

martin587, it clearly says right at the start of the article Town made the better offer financially.

Sorry but cannot blame him if his family live up north. Wish people would read the story and the reasons rather than just use it as an excuse to have a go at the club!

Positive about this is town offer more money than Wigan and only personal reason sold him Wigan. So it does show Marcus is will to open the war chest to get players in

There's always at least one fckwit who doesn't read the story before commenting. We cannot do anything about where his family is from. At least it sounds like we made him a better offer than Wigan.
